The photo of this butterfly was taken at Highlands Wilderness near Bela Bela. Now what is it? Acraea stenobea (Suffused Acraea) or Acraea lygus (Lygus Acraea). I find these two species difficult to separate, although I am leaning towards lygus, while it is rarer it has been recorded on the farm previously. But then again I may be waaaaaaaaaaay off the mark again.

Locality: Highlands Wilderness Game Farm
Interesting observation notes, etc: Was observed feeding on flowers on a hilltop.

This is an Acraea lygus (Lygus Acraea). Acraea stenobea (Suffused Acraea) normally has a well defined band on the forewing, and the black basal area is a bit bigger. This is another great record, even though this butterfly has been found at least as far south as Johannesburg, but they are definitely not common!
