Niewoudtsville 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Yolande and I are going to Niewoudtsville at the end of August on a work related trip. Having learnt from other Lepsoc members, Friday just happens to be when the business part of the trip will take place , leaving us the weekend free. We will be staying on a tea farm about 30km outside of town.

What could we expect to see at this time of the year?

Cheers,
Justin

If you go to the McGregor farm Glenlyon (I think it is now a Botanical Garden) you should be at the right time of the year for McGregor's Blue Lepidochrysops macgregori. Also there should be something flying near the Waterfall, and the rocky prominences at the top of Van Rhyns Pass may have some Lepidochrysops titei on them.

Thanks for the advice Steve, will keep it in mind for our next trip to the area.

While this was not a dedicated butterfly trip (difficult to buttefly from the back of a bakkie) - I certainly saw the four most expensive butterflies species to date for us (Yes four species the entire weekend and one of them on the road between Niewoudtville & Vanrynsdorp on the way back to Cape Town).

The farm certainly has potential though and we are both looking forward to spening some more time in the area searching for butterflies in the future.

Cheers,
Justin
